Forsaken Gods is a stand-alone non-canon sequel to Gothic 3, it does not contains a base game so you'll have to play Gothic 3 first. Be aware though that FG was not made by Piranha Bytes and is not an official part of the story. And franklyIt's an abysmal bug-ridden game. Also check out Arcania.

Forsaken Gods is not a "version" of Gothic 3, but a separate game made by separate developers. It's been one of ex-publisher JoWood's attempts at squeezing something out of the Gothic IP by giving away Piranha Bytes' Genome engine and Gothic 3 assets to external developers in order to have them create more Gothic content. #2.

I played gothic 3 growing up as it came out i was young as hell and never beat the game opting to kill everyone i found for the xp, and figuring out on my own that i could knock everyone down for their loot etc. I never realized how close i came to beating the game i had 3 of the adanos artifacts and because i killed rhobar and the guy in Ishtar i had the other things to open the rock portal
